Same test, different winner

Same test, different winner

No, it isn’t déjà vu – If you’re a regular visitor to WhatTyre, you may well have encountered the Auto Straßenverkehr 2025 winter tyre test on a past visit. But although everything seems very familiar, one or two points here aren’t as you recall.

The reason for this confusion is that the ten tyres Auto Straßenverkehr evaluates here are the self-same size 215/55 R17 products that appeared in the auto motor und sport (ams) test just a couple of weeks ago. Same brands, same models, and again all were tested on an Audi S Q2. But who is that there in first place?

In good news for Goodyear, its UltraGrip Perofrmance+ unseated the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P in the Auto Straßenverkehr test, relegating the ams winner to second place. The reason for this swap at the top is that Auto Straßenverkehr brought an additional factor into its test – cost. Tyre purchase price contributes five per cent towards the total score in this rebranded test, nudging the slightly more affordable Goodyear tyre into first place. Testing in dry conditions accounts for just 25 per cent of the total score, rather than the 30 per cent that ams gave this category.

Another distinction between the Auto Straßenverkehr and ams versions of the test is that the former did not result in a rating higher than ‘very good’. While ams rated the Continental and Goodyear tyres as ‘phenomenal’, this time round they found themselves part of a larger group of six.

These differences aside, the Auto Straßenverkehr delivered fundamentally the same results as its ams version. Nine from the ten tyres gained a recommendation, with one missing out due to serious performance issues.
